Southside Radio reaches a broad audience from its base in Western Europe`s largest health centre, the James Cook University Hospital in Teesside. The target audience is 18 to 75 year olds, with a mixture of programmes of a general nature for all age groups, and specialist shows aimed at particular audiences, for example classical and rock music. Southside`s philosophy is one of life affirmation, healthy lifestyle activities and rural features

CELEBRATING OUR 25th BIRTHDAY

In 2006 we are 25 years old, having started our radio service way back in 1981. The intervening years have changed the station quite considerably from our initial location in ‘the broom cupboard’. Usually our signal is distributed around the hospital by Patientline. However. we occasionally transmit across Teesside on 107.4 FM and have been in negotiations for a longer term licence with Ofcom since Nov 2004 ( www.ofcom.org.uk  ).

As part of our silver jubilee celebrations in 2006, we intend to make much of our original speech-based programming available via downloading from our website

Southside was also instrumental in setting up SIREN FM ( Scholars in radio Entertainment )at the University of Lincoln ( now the main base of the Radio Studies Network in the UK )

With contributors and correspondents in Los Angeles, Pennsylvania, New York, Athens. Hong Kong, Osaka, & Newcastle Australia, Southside is truly evolving into a global webcast service, providing exciting, dynamic audio contributions from its North East location, whilst at the same time seekng to provide patients and staff at the JCUH with their own personal `good news` audio/webservice.

Wherever possible Southside features the work of the Healing Arts trust and the many International health Conferences which are hosted by the JCUH Academic Centre.

We are always keen to establish links with industry and commerce, and always seek to build long-lasting links for the benefit of the voluntary broadcasters and trainees at Southside  and the business sector.
