> THE BREAKTHROUGH GOAL
> ======================
>
> “The point of living, and of being an optimist, is to be foolish
> enough to believe the best is yet to come.”
>
> -Peter Ustinov
>
> A few years back I was chatting with a seriously overwhelmed
> client (let’s call her “Marcie”) about the numerous challenges
> she felt she was facing in her career.  As an experiment, I
> asked her to turn each of those challenges into a goal that if
> she wanted to, she could actively pursue.
>
> For example, “no-one will hire me” became “to get a wonderful
> job”; “I’m too old for this business” became “to look and feel
> great, every single day”; “I’m not good enough” became “to
> develop my skill set to the highest level in the industry”.
>
> By the time we were finished, Marcie had come up with 26
> separate goals, each one of which related to one of the
> challenges she felt were contributing to her overwhelm.
>
> While the process of refocusing on what she wanted had been
> useful, Marcie told me that imagining pursuing everything on her
> new goal list was almost as stressful as worrying about the
> challenges had been!
>
> So I asked her a different question:
>
> *If you could pursue only one goal this year, the successful
> achievement of which would make reaching all of your other goals
> more likely, what would that goal be?
>
> As she thought about her answer to that question, I told her the
> story of a course I had done in the late 1980’s that encouraged
> us to set 13 goals but to actively work on only one of them.
> The idea was that as we consciously applied ourselves
> whole-heartedly towards the achievement of one goal, we would
> naturally begin to unconsciously work on all the others.
>
> That approach worked so well that I incorporated that strategy
> into many areas of my life, creating breakthroughs in almost
> every place that I applied it.
>
> For example, I realized that all of my individual financial
> goals would become much more achievable if I could eliminate my
> guilt, fear and shame around earning money.
>
> I set myself the “breakthrough goal” of “Making money a worthy
> goal”.  In the course of one year, I more than doubled my income
> and finally broke what for me had seemed the insurmountable
> “six figure” barrier.
>
> At another time in my life, I was struggling to integrate the
> various practical and philosophical schools of thought I was
> learning as a coach into a cohesive system I could apply to make
> a consistent positive difference with my clients.
>
> By setting myself the breakthrough goal of “being really, truly,
> deeply happy”, I not only became far more effective as a coach,
> I got the added benefit of becoming really, truly, deeply
> happier!
>
> As I told Marcie all these stories and more, she had one of
> those wonderful “lightbulb moment” I live for in my practice.
> In a voice filled with wonder, she said “I’ve got it!  My
> breakthrough goal is to begin each day ‘photo-shoot ready’”
>
> She told me that on those days when she had to be photographed
> for magazines or publicity, she would arise early, exercise or
> do yoga to focus her mind and body, have a healthy breakfast and
> really allow herself the time and space to pamper herself.
>
> Consequently, by the time she had to face the cameras, her best
> self was fully present and ready for action.
>
> In contrast, on days where she didn’t have to do a photo shoot
> or go out in public, she would wake up late, slob around in her
> pajamas until Noon and eat whatever was leftover in the
> fridge.
>
> By bringing her ‘photo-shoot ready’ self to each day, regardless
> of what was on her to-do list, she was able to do each thing
> and face the day with confidence and ease.
>
> When I last spoke to Marcie, she had only achieved 12 of the 26
> things on her original goal list.  But as she pointed out to
> me, the quality of her life had improved to the point that many
> of the goals, even those she had already achieved, seemed
> almost incidental.
>
> What mattered most to her was that she had finally broken
> through to an easier, happier and more enjoyable way of being in
> the world.
>
> ——————–
> Today’s Experiment:
> ——————–
>
> 1. Make a list of your top goals in life.  If you’re not sure
> what you really want, begin with a list of what you know that
> you don’t want and ask yourself “What would I rather have
> instead of this?”
>
> 2. Ask yourself any of these variations on the breakthrough
> question:
>
> “If you could pursue only one goal this year, the successful
> achievement of which would make reaching all of your other goals
> more likely, what would that goal be?”
>
> “What is the one thing you know to focus on which will make
> everything else in your life more likely to work out the way you
> most want it to?”
>
> “What would be one thing you could be, do or have that would
> make success in every other of your life more likely and more
> fun?”
>
> 3. Take your time and allow your breakthrough goal to emerge.
> You’ll know you’ve got it when you feel a sense of peace and
> clarity in relation to your original list.
>
> Have fun, learn heaps, and happy exploring!

> With love,
