The Safe Haven for Donkeys in The Holy Land is currently based on the Moshav Gan Yoshiyya some 50 ilometers north of Tel Aviv where it currently provides life time sanctuary for some 109 donkeys and horses and 1 particularly stroppy mule called Christopher From this base established by Lucy Fensom in 2000 the team runs their outreach project part funded by Brooke animal hospitals to regular locations in the occupied territories. Animals in need of routine and emergency treatment are attended to by their regular local Israeli vet Pierre, who visits the sanctuary every morning, and the team of dedicated firstaiders. Since the instigation of this project just over 2 years ago they have also concentrated on education of the local owners in routine husbandry and animal welfare. On my third visit from which I have just returned I became aware of the frustration involved in the provision of immediate emergency treatment and rescue of an abused donkeys with limited resources and funding.
Leila a 4 year old donkey mare had produced a dead foal and retained the placenta. She had effectively been left to die from toxaemia in the sun. Not through deliberate cruelty but because the owner had no alternative. Despite successfully removing the putrid placenta flushing the uterus as well as I could under the circumstances and giving what limited intra venous fluid replacement was available as you can see in the photograph above I was unable to save her. The frustration is in knowing that if the resources needed were available I could have done so.
Burnie as he was christened when we got him back to the sanctuary had been dowsed in gasoline and torched simple because he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. We heard about him as we were completing an outreach project visit near Tybae and were able to go straight out and bring him into the safe haven were he is now receiving the best attention possible for his extensive burns and will we hope live comfortably for the rest of his life.
This small yet amazingly effective and efficient charity is currently in desperate need of financial support for the purchase of permanent premises from which to continue its welfare work. For details see www.safehaven4donkeys.org .
